Everyone experiences bad breath from time to time. In fact, halitosis affects nearly 50 million Americans. If you are one of these people, then you will find this article very informative. There are some things that you can do to reduce the amount of odor in your mouth. There are ways to even eliminate it altogether on a daily basis. Read the following tips to help you get rid of foul smells from your mouth and keep your mouth smelling fresh.

  • Brush your mouth at least twice a day. Do this by brushing your teeth well. Scrub your teeth with your toothbrush until you are sure you have brushed well. Make sure you have brushed the inward side of the teeth as well as the outward side all the way to the gums.
  • Floss and or Water Pik your teeth daily. The food that gets trapped between your teeth and slightly under your gums becomes very smelly if left there. Flossing and using water under pressure gets it out of the cracks and out of your mouth.
  • To keep the mouth fresh, drink peppermint tea. Peppermint neutralizes the sour scent that holds digestive acids. You do not need to drink it every day. A few times a week will do. You don't like tea? Well, even if you swish it around in your mouth, it will help.
  • Carry around sugar free peppermint mints to pop into your mouth. It is good to have them handy when you need to freshen up your mouth.
  • Take a terry wash cloth and wet it. Rub your tongue, wiping away any fil m of bacteria that lies on it.
  • Try brushing with a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. This will help kill some of the anaerobic bacteria that cause bad breath. It will also whiten your teeth over time.
  • After brushing your teeth, don't forget to brush your tongue. The film on your tongue is loaded with bacteria. Brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth.
  • Drink lemonade instead of soda. Lemons are rich in vitamins A and C. These vitamins help reduce the length of time you will have bad breath.
  • Eat a serving of yogurt each day. The bacteria in yogurt will help with digestion and reduce the bad breath that is caused by it.
  • Drink plenty of water to wash away any film that may be in your mouth. Plus, water hydrates you and will help you avoid getting a dry mouth. Being dry makes your mouth smell worse. Saliva helps keep bacteria at bay.
  • Boil one cup of water in the microwave. Add one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon to taste. This trick is said to keep mouths fresh all day.
  • Stop smoking or don't start. Nicotine leaves a nasty smell in your mouth.
  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. You not only will feel better, but the large amount of vitamin C helps you have a healthy mouth overall, which, in turn, improves your breath.
  • Chew on a piece of parsley or alfalfa after eating. The chlorophyll in these plants kills bacteria that cause bad breath.
  • Chew sugarless gum several times a day, especially one that contains Xylitol such as Trident. The best times to chew it is after meals. It helps to clean the teeth, stimulates protective saliva and makes the bacteria less "sticky."
